August listening so far

Right, this blog is rapidly becoming more of a - what am I listening to - page, but at the moment, with work continuing on issue 3, 'real work' commitments and generally just life getting in the way, c'est la vie, I'm afraid. Anyway, I hope it leads to some great discoveries.

Here are my current favourites

Indeed. There's some real Australian gems out there, proving it's not just a hotbed for that black thrash stuff.

The Mission

Asgard Root is a high quality, sporadically realised printed zine available to order directly and securely from yours truly right here. Its original raison d'être was my own desire to contribute something to the black metal underground, a scene that has helped me inordinately over the years and provided innumerable highlights, from Burzum's Filosofem, to Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger via myriad countries, times and subgenres.

It is becoming increasingly clear to me that the feeling and spirit of a release is far more relevant than genre. Whether it is the majesty of Dawn's Slaughtersun..., the joyous coldwave of Cold Cave's Love Comes Close, older postpunk gems such as Magazine's Secondhand Daylight, the minimal drone of Eleh's Location Monumentum, or the whitewashed noise of Prurient's The History Of Aids reissued on vinyl. All of them have moved me in their own way and they are all special, special recordings that need to be discovered.

It is my intention with this blog to record a fragment of my listening diet and to persuade as many of you as possible to open your ears and treat them to some of the greatest joys on offer, regardless of genre. I would like to think that as well as supporting the artists found on this page, some of you will investigate my printed zine and will leave you with the links to my myspace page and to Big Cartel where you can order your own copies.
